Payslip Checker — Why Does My Deduction Look Wrong?

Most payslip guides stop at a checklist of possible causes. This tool does the arithmetic: type in what your payslip actually deducted, and it recomputes your figures under every known rule variant — current and stale — and tells you which ones reproduce your payslip exactly.

Try the pre-loaded example: gross Rs 200,000, payslip tax Rs 13,000, payslip EOBI Rs 2,000. The tax is actually correct under TY2027 — but the EOBI is the well-known error: 1% of the employee's own salary instead of 1% of the minimum wage. The correct EOBI is Rs 407 or Rs 370. This exact mistake appears in employer payrolls and in at least one widely used online calculator, which is how it keeps spreading.

Check your payslip, line by line

Enter what your payslip actually deducted. The checker recomputes your figures under every known rule variant — current and stale — and names which ones explain your payslip. Causes are shown as possibilities with the recomputed figures, never as certainties: only your payroll department can confirm which one it is.

Got a raise or joined mid-year? (optional — unlocks the annualisation check)
Other deductions on the payslip (optional)

Provident fund, loans and similar lines are separated out — they are not tax, and mixing them in is how most "my tax looks wrong" gaps appear.

The cause library

Every diagnosis the checker can produce is a recomputation variant stored as data — the same library rendered in prose on Why Your Payslip Tax Differs: (1) EOBI charged on the other minimum-wage base; (2) EOBI computed on your own salary; (3) a stale slab table (TY2026 or pre-2025); (4) your new salary annualised over the full year after a raise or mid-year start; (5) the withdrawn 9% salaried surcharge still applied; (6) a taxable-allowance scope difference (possibility only); (7) provident fund and other non-tax deductions inflating the apparent gap. Causes are ranked by how closely their recomputed figure matches your payslip, and each carries the exact question to put to payroll.

Common questions

How does the checker decide what caused my deduction?

It recomputes your monthly tax and EOBI under each rule variant in its library — the current TY2027 table, the TY2026 table, the pre-2025 table, TY2027 plus the withdrawn 9% surcharge, a full-year projection at a new salary after a raise, and both EOBI bases plus the known 1%-of-own-salary error — and compares each recomputed figure with the one on your payslip. Matches are ranked by closeness and shown with both figures. It shows possibilities, not verdicts: your payroll department is the only party that can confirm which variant they applied.

My payslip tax matches nothing. What then?

The checker says so, and shows the one remaining generic explanation as a labelled possibility: a scope difference — your employer taxes an allowance the simple tools treat as exempt, or the reverse. That cannot be resolved from the gross figure alone; ask payroll for the taxable-income breakdown on your payslip, which separates the question in one step.

The checker says my tax is right but my net still feels low. What else could it be?

Look at the non-tax lines: provident fund (often 8.33% of basic or a fixed percentage of gross), loan and advance repayments, late/absent deductions, and union or welfare funds. The checker keeps those separate on purpose — enter them in the "other deductions" section and they are totalled apart from the tax comparison instead of polluting it.

Is it safe to type my salary into this page?

The computation runs entirely in your browser; nothing is transmitted or stored. You can verify this by loading the page and switching off your connection — the checker keeps working.
